Race Results 26/10/20

This report is a summary of results over the past few weeks, which thankfully included an actual rather than virtual events, and which also included some fantastic individual performances (i.e. PB’s).

Robert Farrant was supposed to have been competing in the Boston (USA) Marathon back in April 2020, a race in which I last ran way back in 1993 when my brother-in-law lived in that city. This Marathon was postponed until 14th September, but like the London Marathon, the format was subsequently changed to a virtual event. In the virtual competition, Rob finished in position 1,263 / 15,972 finishers in a time of 3:10:26. His BRJ Marathon PB is 2:48:54.

An actual running festival that included events over distances of 5k, 10k, Half Marathon, 16 miles, 20 miles & Full Marathon. I noted that among the entry list were BRJ members Felicity Baillie (10K) and Guy Forster (Half Marathon), but I suspect they did not attend. Sadly, the published race results do not allow searching by club name so if you did compete and are not listed in any of the attachments please do let me know & I will update my records accordingly.

The 3 BRJ entrants all ran superbly, with 2 individuals earning themselves new BRJ PB’s. The field in the 5k was particularly strong this year & James Orrell was the star club performer with a 16 minute run. He was runner-up in this particular event back in 2019, but even with a 52 second 5k PB over his 2019 time he still only finished in 6th position. His new 5k PB extended his dominance as the Club’s Junior Boys 5k Champion. A summary of the current Junior Road Run PB list is duly attached. In case you were unaware, the Junior & Senior club records appear on the new BRJ website. It is interesting to note that had James been a Senior member, he would be placed equal 3rd (with John Uff) in the Club Senior 5k PB list. With James current form I very much suspect that John’s time will be bettered before too long.

Keelan Duffy was the next BRJ runner home finishing just 30 secs short of the club 5k PB time that he set at the same event in 2019. Finally, Alex Mitton also had a great run earning himself a 1 min 17 sec club PB over the time he secured at the July 2019 Ferry Meadows 5k.

With the apparent absence of Felicity Baillie, Paul Mitton was the sole BRJ entrant in Wave 1 (of 2). Having watched his son Alex secure a PB in the 5k, Paul was under great pressure to perform. He did not disappoint as his finish time represented a 30 sec improvement over his previous BRJ 10K PB set at 2019’s Peterborough New Years Eve event. Paul also secured himself the runner-up position in his Age Category at Bedford. This new time also represented PB #3 of 2020 which places him as joint leader in the Senior Men’s “Most Run PB’s of 2020” competition alongside Neil Jarvis (a regular winner of this particular club competition).

David Hudson & Neil Jarvis were the BRJ finishers. David’s run, potentially his last one before he ties the knot in November, saw him finish in 6th position of the 198 finishers & secure himself 3rd position in his Age Category. Despite being “race rusty” he finished just shy of his BRJ Marathon PB of 2:26:46.

Neil had a great run, earning a new club Marathon PB by a margin of 5 mins 17 secs. His performances in recent Marathons have seen him edge ever closer to the sub-3 hour finish he wants. I feel sure his aspiration will be secured very shortly. As mentioned above, Neil is currently joint leader in the Most Run PB’s of 2020 competition with Paul Mitton.

After the success of the recent 10k handicap event, the club has now rolled out the “Second Wave Race Series” with a choice of either 5k or 10K distances. Race 1 of the series took place at Great Staughton. Results from the 5k & 10k events are duly attached.

Race 2 of this new series takes place on Sunday 22nd November at a location in Alconbury. The feedback from those attending today’s race was that both events were well organised, well marshalled and more importantly good fun! Do keep a look out for the event sign-up details.

The results have yet to be published on the race organisers website and I will circulate them in due course IF I spot there were any BRJ entrants.1
