Parkrun 5K
The weekend saw a very significant milestone in the history of Parkrun, 9 BRJ’ers were part of this celebration. It was the 1,000th event at Bushy Park which was the venue for the inaugural Parkrun taking place on 2nd October 2004 with just 13 runners. To date, the previous maximum number of finishers at Bushy Park was 2,545 which was on Christmas Day 2019. The fastest finish time recorded at Bushy is 00:13:48 set by Andy Baddeley back in August 2012.
It was widely expected that the milestone event would attract considerable interest by Parkrun tourists & in anticipation they acquired 3,500 Finish Tokens. However, there were over 6,204 finishers on the day meaning that when the Finish Tokens were exhausted, paper Raffle Tickets were used & then followed by having the finish position written on the wrist. In addition, even with operating 7 finish funnels it took up to 1 hour to get your finish position scanned.
Given the extraordinary number of finishers a Club PB was unlikely & this proved to be the case, but a Course Best was recorded by Megan Wilson.
In addition to Bushy Park, BRJ’ers returned to Black Park (Club 5K Debut for Emma Rigby), Ferry Meadows, Kettering (2nd Woman finisher for Mica Covell), Littleport, Malling, Margate, Medina IOW, Milton Country, Rugby & Whittlesey. At Storeys Field, Adam D’Souza secured Club PB #15 of 2024 by an 18 Sec margin compared to his run at Race 5 of the 2024 Peterborough Grand Prix Series 5K.
4 BRJ’ers made Parkrun Venue Debuts, namely David Thomas at Bognor Regis, Mark Jackman at Puolarmaari (Finland), Three Brooks by Nicki McMahon & Vandeleur (Kilrush, Ireland) by Melanie Gearing.
At Huntingdon #510, Jim Greenley completed Parkrun #250 & Alison Orrell #300.
