BRJ Hosts Inaugural Ouse Valley Marathon

The fact that the old county of Huntingdonshire’s stretch of the Ouse Valley Way measures 26.2 miles was too much to resist for member Alice Noyes who, with the help of the club, organised the inaugural Ouse Valley Way Marathon. On Sunday 4th September, over 100 runners, many from local clubs, set off along the scenic route from Earith to Eynesbury. A route that would take them through St Ives, Houghton, Godmanchester and St Neots.

Race Director, Alice Noyes “We are so lucky to have this fabulous route on a doorstep, and this race has introduced a whole new group of people to our beautiful county. We are very grateful to the support we received from the Countryside Services team at

imageHuntingdonshire District Council, particularly Paul Claydon, the Ouse Valley Way Ranger who prepared the course for us to perfection, and to Judith Arnold for all her advice. We sincerely hope that with the transfer of footpaths to Cambridgeshire County that the maintenance of the path will not be downgraded, for as a local club we run on this path regularly and as we hope to be able to run this race again.”

Historically, the route was run as a friendly event between BRJ and Riverside Runners but this is the first time it has been held as an official race and opened to the public. Local clubs were out in force with Cambridge & Coleridge’s Charles Wartnaby leading the race in 3.03.12 and BRJ’s Anna Douglas (pictured) leading home the ladies in 3.46.29. Second and third places went to Riverside Runner Paul Oliver – 3.06.15 and Hunts AC’s Sean Barker – 3.17.46. Cambridge & Coleridge’s Sam Lewsey – 3.50.31 was second lady and third was Anna Kilner – 4.11.11. Many BRJ members chose this

Feedback from the runners is excellent with comments such as, “Great race, great organisation, great marshals and easy to follow course” and “I can't think of anything that could be improved. It was amazing! Thank you for organising and to the brilliant marshals.”image
